Do detox diets really work? Marketplace, on the CBC is doing a show on Friday at 8pm, 'debunking' the detox diet as a marketing ploy. I don't know what angle the show plans to take, but I'm sure they're not going to come out in favour of the detox. Detox is extreme, it is not for everyone. It is not something you do, and then return to your bad habits (drinking, smoking...eating raw hotdogs).
Some say the detox does not work, that the term itself is restricted in the medical community to be used for addictions and poisoning. Well if this body of mine hasn't been poisoned...I don't know what you'd call it. Also, I've never been a big fan of the medical community and their narrow minded way of looking at things (this of course does not include all med professionals).
I am aware that our bodies have a natural detoxing ability...hell, if it didn't...we'd all be dead!. However, I cannot ignore the 'unproven scientifically' fact (for me), that adding rich dark leafy greens into my diet via juice will repair liver function.
At the end of my cancer treatments, my liver was a wreck...enzymes way too high. I wasn't given any course of action to repair this by the doctors I was seeing. No one told me to lose the 60 excess pounds. No one asked me about my diet. I was simply left with the knowledge that I had a messed up liver.
I took this information into my own hands. I did as much research as I could, and talked to people who treat illness naturally. I developed a protocol for myself to turn my health around. It started simply enough, I added a glass of lemon water to my day each morning (lemon does wonders for the liver). I also began taking 'milk thistle' drops daily, and I began a short juice cleanse.
After a couple of weeks, I had my liver enzymes repeated. They were normal. My liver had repaired itself. No more elevated enzymes, no more fatty liver. My 'diet' healed my liver. Although my liver was okay, the rest of me still felt like shit. I was still overweight, my joints ached constantly, my acid reflux was out of control, and my mood was usually neutral or depressed. I realized that what I had done so far was not enough. I wanted to feel better as well ass be better.
This is when I began my 30 day juice cleanse. At the end of 14 of the 30 days, not only have I lost 13.5 lbs, but I feel amazing!. No acid reflux, no joint pain...nothing...nada. My 'diet' has relieved my ailments. Now tell me that a juice cleanse/detox is hocuspocus.
I know there are detox diets out there that are crap and doing a lot of damage. There are also people profiting from them. This is not one of them. This is fresh, raw, organic produce. Nothing gimmicky about that.

You are living proof that taking control of your health and medical decisions is the right choice. We all know there is a direct link between our diet and our health but often so many of us choose to ignore it. Kudos to you Leeann on all the effort you are putting into healing and restoring your body to a happy healthy one!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tara, and thank you for reading and commenting on my rantings, you're the best!
DeleteHey Lee, I went to a Juicing Shop downtown Guelph today. $8.00 bucks for 16 ounces. It was super yummy, beets, kale, celery and an apple. And it was nice I didn't have to clean out my juicer to get fresh juice. :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha, I would pay 8 bucks to not have to clean my juicer too!!
DeleteI'm really happy to see that you are taking back your health and by juicing it's the way to go for having seen so many people succeed with it. Keep telling us so we can share your story to more people who needs this info. (there is a raw potluck every month in St Cath that is really interesting to meet people with similar stories, I can give you the info if you want). Enjoy your juice! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Fab, I would love that information.
DeleteSorry for not replying sooner... the potluck was yesterday! It's every month. The name is Conscious Eating Niagara. They have a Facebook page too or you can register on the Meetup group page to get all the info for the next potluck. http://www.meetup.com/Conscious-Eating-Niagara/
DeleteKeep on the juicing and feeling great!
